Immune priming in insects involves an initial challenge with a non-pathogenic microbe or exposure to a low dose of pathogenic microorganisms, which provides a certain degree of protection against a subsequent pathogenic infection. The protective effect of insect immune priming has been linked to the activation of humoral or cellular features of the innate immune response during the preliminary challenge, and these effects might last long enough to promote the survival of the infected animal.

Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem worldwide. Of particular importance is the resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Mtb to currently available antibiotics used in the treatment of infected patients. This acetyltransferase is known to modify AGs, not at a single position, as usual for this type of enzyme, but at multiple amine sites. We identified, using in silico techniques, 22 homologues from a wide variety of bacteria, that we then cloned, purified, and biochemically studied.

In addition, an inhibitor proved to be active against all homologues tested. Our findings show that this family of acetyltransferase enzymes exists in both mycobacteria and non-mycobacteria and in both pathogenic and nonpathogenic species. The bacterial strains described herein should be monitored for rising resistance rates to AGs. IT has been shown 1 that the effect of penicillin on an infection in rabbits which was ordinarily controlled by penicillin was much reduced if penicillinase-producing, non-pathogenic bacteria were present at the site of infection. Thus all rabbits died when a mixed infection caused by a penicillin-sensitive pathogenic Pasteurella bacteria and penicillinase-producing non-pathogenic Aureus staphylococci was treated with penicillin. Control animals which were infected with Pasteurella bacteria alone and which were treated in the same way recovered easily.

Comparatively Speaking: Pathogenic vs. Non-pathogenic Bacteria

The terms pathogenic and non-pathogenic are often are applied to various microbes. By definition, a pathogen is a specific cause of a disease, while a non-pathogen is considered harmless. In reality, the distinction is not always clear. In , the German physician Robert Koch formalized the criteria to classify bacteria as pathogenic.

J Food Prot 1 April ; 82 4 : — This study investigated the effects of enzyme application on biofilms of bacterial isolates from a cafeteria kitchen and foodborne pathogens and the susceptibility of Salmonella biofilms to proteinase K combined with chlorine treatment. The results showed that certain enzymes inhibited biofilm formation by the kitchen-originated bacteria; however, the enzymatic effect was diminished on the mature biofilms. Biofilm formation of V.

- Espere.
