Heart Physiology and Pathophysiology, 4E , provides the foundation for the scientific understanding of heart function and dysfunction, and bridges the gap between basic cardiovascular science and clinical cardiology. This comprehensive text covers all the important aspects of the heart and vascular system. The most important and relevant disorders are presented, with emphasis on the mechanisms involved.

This comprehensive and updated Second edition is an impressive contribution to the fundamentals of basic science of the heart. The editor has assembled 48 chapters written by experts and wellknown researchers. Eight new chapters, a precious and timely addition to the first edition, include comprehensive discussions on contractile proteins of cardiac muscle, contractile proteins of smooth muscle, cyclic nucleotides and protein kinase in smooth muscle, calcium-activated ion currents in cardiac muscle, developmental changes in adrenergic modulation, endothelial cell interactions with vascular smooth-muscle cells, myocardial infarction and free radical effects on the heart, and extravascular coronary resistance.

This comprehensive text covers all the important aspects of the heart and vascular system. The most important and relevant disorders are presented, with emphasis on the mechanisms involved. The first three editions of this book developed a reputation as the leading reference in cardiovascular science for researchers and academic cardiologists. This recent edition has been updated, expanded, and includes a number of new contributors. It has also been remodeled to expand its usage as a text reference for cardiology residents, practicing cardiologists, and graduate students. Email Question.

Physiology and Pathophysiology of the Heart

Cardiovascular diseases pose an enormous clinical challenge, remaining the most common cause of death in the world. Sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity, which characterizes several cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure and hypertension, as well as physiological ageing, has been proved to exert in the long-term detrimental effects in a wide range of cardiovascular diseases. Acutely, sympathetic hyperactivity represents the response to an insult to the myocardium, aiming to compensate for decreased cardiac output. This process involves the activation of beta-adrenergic receptors by catecholamine with consequent heart rate and cardiac contractility increase. However, long-term exposure of the heart to elevated norepinephrine and epinephrine levels, originating from sympathetic nerve endings and chromaffin cells of the adrenal gland, results in further progressive deterioration in cardiac structure and function.

Physiology and Pathophysiology of the Heart

The heart itself is made up of 4 chambers, 2 atria and 2 ventricles. De-oxygenated blood returns to the right side of the heart via the venous circulation. It is pumped into the right ventricle and then to the lungs where carbon dioxide is released and oxygen is absorbed. The oxygenated blood then travels back to the left side of the heart into the left atria, then into the left ventricle from where it is pumped into the aorta and arterial circulation.

It is important to understand how cardiac physiology is intertwined with other organ systems and how pathophysiology relates back to simple gross physiology. Cardiac physiology is one of the most important pieces of medical knowledge in healthcare.

This includes improved understanding of the fundamental CaMKII structure, function, and physiological roles [1,2], and more specifically how CaMKII functions in cardiac excitation—contraction coupling [3] and pathophysiological conditions such as hypertrophy and heart failure [4]. Previous reviews on these topics, including the latter in Cardiovascular Research in that could be said to initiate the present series, have set the backdrop for the
