Supplier selection criteria and methods: past, present and future

This paper presents a review of decision criteria reported in the literature for supporting the supplier selection process. The review is based on an extensive search in the academic literature. After a literature review of decision criteria, we discuss the most important criteria: quality. Then different methods and factors for assessing the quality of supplier are discussed. Results showed that all methods and factors mentioned in this paper are not appropriate tools for quality evaluation. Moreover, we propose a novel method using loss functions in order to assess the quality of suppliers.

Supplier evaluation and selection is one of the key organizational functions needed for successful business growth and development. It is critical, therefore, that the procurement professional implements effective processes for qualifying suppliers and determining the award of business. Today we will outline four basic stages of successful sourcing. In addition, we will explore how supplier responsiveness and capability can be evaluated and how these attributes need to be combined. The Procurement Department is expected to lead the process of evaluating competitive offers and selecting the supplier for any particular contract. Remember, to produce a specific result, you must choose the correct mechanism and appropriate sourcing tools. The supplier is the fundamental resource employed by your organization to meet its requirements.

As a consumer, when you want to purchase an item, whether it is a new car or a flat screen television, you will most likely do some research on the prices of your local stores or from vendors on the internet. When you have narrowed your search you then look at other criteria that may be important to you, like warranty or availability. Lastly, you will look at other less tangible criteria such as your previous experiences with the vendor and how their customer service was. This behavior is exactly the same for companies when they want to evaluate the vendors in their supply chain. Unless your company only uses one vendor for each item they purchase, there will invariably be an occasion when a decision has to be made as to which vendor gets your business. There are a number of different scenarios when this will occur, for example when the item is purchased for the first time and when an item is no longer single sourced. When a decision has to be made between vendors, the purchasing or supply chain department will use some vendor evaluation method to be their tool in the decision.

This article investigates the importance of the supplier management process in the quality of the final product. A methodology is developed to analyze the variables involved in the supplier management process and it is illustrated with a case study of the chair manufacturing industry. Research results indicate that the supplier selection process appears to be the most significant variable as it helps in achieving high quality products and customer satisfaction. This paper shows the different analytical steps that arise naturally in the systematic categorization of variables for supplier management. Nine variables related to the supplier selection process were analyzed. Each of these variables was then evaluated through an experimental design using statistical information based on three factors, namely, quality, cost and productivity.
