Herschel 400 Observing Program
British Wildlife is the leading natural history magazine in the UK, providing essential reading for both enthusiast and professional naturalists and wildlife conservationists. Published eight times a year, British Wildlife bridges the gap between popular writing and scientific literature through a combination of long-form articles, regular columns and reports, book reviews and letters. Conservation Land Management CLM is a quarterly magazine that is widely regarded as essential reading for all who are involved in land management for nature conservation, across the British Isles. CLM includes long-form articles, events listings, publication reviews, new product information and updates, reports of conferences and letters. The objects included range from those visible in binoculars to faint galaxies requiring a 30 cm telescope. For most objects descriptions are given for a range of telescope apertures; the catalogue contains data not available elsewhere. Amateur Observing: Telescopes - Eyepieces - Finderscopes and finding - Star atlases - Gadgets - Looking through the telescope - Lighting and the recording of notes - Observing locations - Instruments used in the survey of deep-sky objects - Observing sites for the survey Part II.

For many years, Amateur Astronomers have enjoyed the challenge and excitement provided by the Messier Program of deep-sky objects. The or so objects in the Messier Catalog introduced the observer to the importance of careful observing and record keeping. Upon completion of this project, however, the amateur was left somewhat in a void. He or she wanted to further the quest for deep-sky objects, but outside of the vast New General Catalog , there was no organized program that would provide that next vital step upward. With this idea in mind, the formation of the Herschel Observing Program began. Mullaney alerted amateurs to the William Herschel Catalog of deep-sky objects, and suggested this would be a good project to get into after completion of the Messier Lists.
See Through Telescope. Coma cluster sketch. Jupiter photo. It features stars down to magnitude Manual post-editing was performed in order to ensure non-cluttered charts with readable labels. The atlas also features 21 supplement "zoom" charts of galaxy clusters and densly populated areas, and indications of over "best" objects. The maps were designed for A3 pages, however some find it usable on A4 as well.
Night Sky Atlas: The Moon, Planets, Stars and Deep-Sky Objects
An international society of amateur and professional astronomers specialising in the observation of double stars and 'deep sky' objects founded in Membership is open to anyone who shares the interests of the Society. We've decided to make another couple of our publications available as free downloads. Each is a PDF scan of the original book and you can download a copy by clicking on one of the links in the list below. A deep-sky object DSO is any astronomical object that is not an individual star or Solar System object such as Sun , Moon , planet , comet , etc. This distinction is practical and technical, implying a variety of instruments and techniques appropriate to observation, and does not distinguish the nature of the object itself. Classifying non-stellar astronomical objects began soon after the invention of the telescope. Copeland , written for the majority of its run by Walter Scott Houston , and currently penned by Sue French. There are many amateur astronomical techniques and activities associated with deep-sky objects.
The book is currently available for online use, and is presented for free usage when used on-line 3. This book was originally printed with red covers similar to the image shown, although slightly lighter. If you have further questions, feel free to send E-mail. Over the course of 18 months, ending in , I made many finder charts to help me locate each object, but I had to discard the first two generations due to their not being very helpful.
