What is a ‘system of privilege’?

T he concept of privilege refers to any advantage that is unearned, exclusive, and socially conferred. One way to see this is through a survey in which respondents were asked to close their eyes and picture a drug dealer. When asked to describe what they saw, almost 95 percent mentioned a black person, even though the vast majority of drug dealers in the U. What privilege does is load the odds one way or the other so that the chance of bad things happening to white people as a category of people is much lower than for everyone else, and the chance of good things happening is much higher.

A system of privilege—a family, a workplace, a society—is organized around three basic principles: dominance, identification, and centeredness. A system of white privilege, for example, is white-dominated, which means the default is for white people to occupy positions of power. When a category of people is named the standard for human beings in general, the path of least resistance is to see them as superior, there being no other reason to make them the standard.

It also encourages whites to be unaware of white privilege. White-centeredness is the tendency to put white people and what they do at the center of attention—the front page of the newspaper or magazine, the main character in the movie.

Abundant research, for example, shows that whites and blacks are equally likely to use illegal drugs, which would lead us to expect them to be equally likely to wind up in prison for that offense. On top of that, young white males are the demographic most likely to sell illegal drugs.

But a substantial majority of those in prison for drug offenses are people of color, in spite of their much smaller share of the overall population. The white privilege in this example, is the practice of the criminal justice system to overlook or respond less harshly to drug crimes committed by whites, while the corresponding oppressive consequence for people of color is the systematic selection of people of color for arrest, prosecution, and punishment.

Privilege, Power, and Difference

Professional practice includes staff roles in service delivery at all levels and in all sections of USC. It can stereotype dominant groups as well. This enables the recognition of the locations of power within relationships and the ways this power is manifested in the University. Privilege, in its simplest definition, is understood to be those rights, benefits and advantages enjoyed by a person or body of persons beyond the advantages of other individuals. Majority group refers to the largest group, while a minority group is a group with fewer members represented in the social system.

Across the nation, children of all backgrounds are experiencing a time in which discussions about race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, and culture are at the forefront of their everyday lives. Many people avoid these discussions because they fear that conversations about race, bias, and racism lead to feelings of anger, guilt, discomfort, sadness, and at times disrespect. The current state of our Union, however, no longer allows for these tough conversations to be ignored. While uncomfortable for some, school psychologists are in a position to lead or at least participate in these conversations. By using their knowledge and expertise of systems-level change, school psychologists can facilitate the dialogue to bring about positive, productive outcomes. This document is part of a series of resources developed by the National Association of School Psychologists NASP in response to recent acts of racial violence and the increasingly uncivil discourse occurring across our country.

Jump to navigation. Self-exploration is central to our growth as individuals, our relationships with others, and our ability to promote equity. Our various social identities--sex, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, age, socioeconomic class, religion, and ability, among others--are important aspects of our selves that shape our attitudes, behaviors, worldviews, and experiences. As we work to create and participate in diverse and democratic environments, we need to understand how our own and others' identities and related social locations affect our lives and our interactions with each other. Most of us have identities that are part of both privileged groups for example, male, white, heterosexual, middle or upper class and oppressed groups female, person of color, gay, poor or working class.

Understanding Race and Privilege

Every morning before breakfast I walk with our dogs, Sophie and Elsie, in acres of woods behind our house in the northwest hills of Connecticut. I can feel the seasons come and go. Winter lies long and deep beneath one snowfall layered on another. Come spring, fiddlehead ferns uncoil from the forest floor and then summer exhausts itself before sliding into the cool, crisp clarity of autumn. I like the walks mostly for the solitude.
